I raced Alpine for 12 years on the U.S. Ski Team. All 12 of those years meant training hard in Colorado in November. Many of those years I had already started racing on the glaciers in Europe. November always meant the last tune up before all the big early season races. Then, I took a trip to Mexico the week of Thanksgiving in 2007. When everyone else was training in the harsh Colorado temperatures with artificial snow guns blasting everywhere, I was doing my best to catch a wave off the beaches of Sayulita. That was one of my best years ever.
That’s why I decided, as part of my ’09-’10 training plan ; ), I would do six days in Cabo San Lucas in mid-November. The plan was to implement the same workouts I do at home but in slightly more forgiving temperatures. I felt it was important to get a full dose of vitamin D as we head into the dark months of winter. And there really is nothing like floating around in the ocean to help charge the batteries and strengthen the immune system.
I believe it was a successful training camp filled with running, relaxing by the pool, golf, surf, good eats, and the occasional margarita. Are my batteries charged? Absolutely. Am I fired up to ski? You know it!
