We just arrived at St. Johann for the first tour stop of the New Year. To get here we flew Aspen to Munich via Denver and, oh yes, Los Angeles. When we left Denver I had this strange feeling we were going the wrong way. It was definitely a first. The upside was we didn’t have to worry about weather.
St. Johann is the only stop of the year where they inject water into the hill. This is not a completely pleasant experience. It does make things interesting, however. There were a lot of racers out there today that looked like Bambi on ice. Some looked like they just learned how to ski. It can be a little scary skiing on an injected hill for the first time, especially with big pro-style, cheese wedge jumps with hard flat landings.
Tomorrow is the qualifying run. It’s a night race so we will be under the lights. I think this course will separate the men from the boys. It’s very steep and very hard . You have to bring a whole new set of skills to compete here. I’ll check in again tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
