It's been 12 days since my crash, 9 days since my surgery, and about 4 days since I stopped taking pain medication. I'm finally out of the fog and heading in the right direction.
When I was flying home from Geneva my girlfriend, Suzanne, said "who are you talking to"? And I said, "I just had a whole conversation with Dr. Millett and I told him, jokingly, that he needs to have me ready to ski in two weeks". Apparently I move my lips when I have mock conversations with my doctor about impossible outcomes. After all, I did the same thing to my right shoulder two years ago and it took at least 4 months before it felt strong again.
But this time it was different. I entered Dr. Millett's office 4 weeks before the Opening Ceremonies and 5 weeks before the first training run of the Ski Cross; not much time in the world of surgery and rehab.
The good news is this has been the most rapid rehab I've ever experienced. My range of motion (ROM) and strength are way ahead of schedule due to the accelerated PT program I've been on. My PT, Bill Fabrocini, and Dr. Millett are very happy with my progress and the general feeling is that I will be okay for the Olympics.
What seemed impossible on the flight home from Geneva now seems like a real possibility. I guess it doesn't hurt to have a fake conversation with the doctor. Now I think I'll try to talk myself into the winner's circle!
