First we wondered if Olympic champion Kim Yu-Na was an innocent bystander in the war of words between former coach Brian Orser and her mother/manager Park Mee-hee.
Then the Tweet...
"@Yunaaaa Would you please stop to tell a lie, B? I know exactly what's going on now and this is what I've DECIDED."
Kim does not have a history of emotional outbursts (or a long history of Tweeting), but her management AT Sports confirms she posted the tweet directed at Orser, which was quickly deleted.
Then Kim released a statement on her website.
We expected the 19-year-old to deliver a comment prepared by her management, but in the statement, Kim is adamant that she is expressing her own feelings on the matter.
Here are some revealing takeaways from her statement:
--"Do you think it's really true that my mother decided on her own to part ways with the coach? I'm no longer a child."
--"He was my coach, and whether we stay on or part ways, it was my final decision, and this is what I decided to do, with discretion, after consulting with my mother."
--"It's unbearable to let people believe lies and let criticisms fall on those who are innocent. Why something that could have ended well had to end up being so hurtful like this to each other...I just really want it to stop."
--"If you knew about the process that we went through, you will understand how shocked and flabbergasted we felt when we saw Orser's interviews."
While many were shocked by the Kim-Orser split, it is not uncommon for skaters to make major coaching changes, even after great success. If the Olympic champ wanted to move on, she should.
But as Kim says, it is unfortunate that "something that could have ended well had to end up being so hurtful."
