A beach volleyball tournament will take place this weekend at Manhattan Beach, but it will not be run by the AVP. Instead, the California Beach Volleyball Association is in charge of the event, and it apparently will use the sport's old competition rules -- 9x9 meter court, sideout scoring, one game to 15, no antennas, no let serve and played with an 18-panel original Wilson ball.
Since beach volleyball was added to the Olympics, the AVP has gone with the new rules -- 8x8 meter court, rally scoring, best two out of three sets (first two to 21; third, if necessary, to 15), antennas, let serve and current Wilson AVP ball. These are also the rules used by the FIVB World Tour.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh, who was hoping to play in her first tournament since giving birth to a second child, may boycott the event because of the rules. She wrote a letter to the Manhattan Beach City Council saying the rules are outdated and dividing the fragile sport.
Which do you think the Manhattan Beach tournament should use this weekend: old school or new school rules? Tell us below, then go to our beach volleyball page to vote and be heard.
