IRVINE, Calif. -- Aaron Peirsol's week at the Pan-Pacific Swimming Championships took an interesting twist Friday night.
But let's first turn back the clocks and remember what happened on Wednesday, the first day of this meet.
Peirsol did not initially qualify for the 100m backstroke A final because of the Pan-Pacs rule that states no more than two swimmers from each country can advance. But thanks to Ryan Lochte scratching from the final, Peirsol was bumped up to the championship heat ... a race he ended up winning.
Friday night, Peirsol once again fell victim to that very same rule in the 200m backstroke. And unfortunately for him, nobody scratched so he was forced to swim in the B final.
But of course, Peirsol -- who hails from Irvine but now lives in Austin, Texas -- won that race too. He touched the wall in 1 minute, 56.67 seconds, a time that would have placed him fourth in the championship race.
Lochte was the A final victor with a result of 1:54.12.
