The AVP Tour canceled the remaining five events on its 2010 schedule Friday, the next of which was supposed to be the famed Manhattan Beach Open Aug. 20-22. But according to a few sources, a Manhattan Beach tournament will still take place this summer -- it just won't be run by the AVP.
According to the L.A. Times, the city of Manhattan Beach and the California Beach Volleyball Assn. have stepped in to save the tournament, which will run this coming Friday to Sunday as planned. There will be no stadium seating or grandstands (so nothing like the picture above from last year).
And according to the Manhattan Beach Patch, the city might ask Charles Saikley's son to run the tournament, as Saikley started the popular Six-Man Volleyball tournament. This would be the 50th anniversary of the event.
This tournament is not to be confused with the Wide Open Tour's scheduled event in Manhattan Beach, Sept. 24-26. This tour, run by beach volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, features "old school" rules -- a 30ft. x 60ft. court and side-out scoring.
Considering most AVP players don't have much else going on anymore, they're likely to enter one or both of these Manhattan Beach tourneys.
