Russia was the clear favorite to win a third straight title all along at the world championships in Germany. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, was nearly eliminated on numerous occasions. But that resiliency proved victorious in the gold-medal game.

Game, set, Czech: Russia loses in finale
Sparked by an early goal by Jakub Klepis and brilliant goal-tending by Tomas Vokoun, the Czech Republic stunned two-time defending champion Russia to win gold at the World Championships. Russia had won 27 straight Worlds games.

Sweden silences Germany for bronze
Sweden captured the bronze medal at the hockey world championships with a 3-1 victory over host Germany. After scoring twice in the third period, Sweden earned its 15th bronze medal and sixth since the current playoff format started in 1992.

U.S. shoots down Italy, avoids relegation
The U.S. avoided relegation from the top division of international hockey by defeating Italy 3-2 in a shootout at the world championships. The Americans failed to win a game in group play, but swept their three games in the relegation round.
