Keflezighi: American standard
For the first time since 1982, the men's race at the New York Marathon has an American champion. Meb Keflezighi led an American contingent that placed six runners in the top 10. Keflezighi's personal-best time of two hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds comes two years after suffering a near-career-ending hip injury during the Olympic Trials in New York City.
Tulu ends Radcliffe's reign
In what was supposed to be Paula Radcliffe's moment, it was another champion that rose to the occasion in New York. Derartu Tulu, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, sprinted through Central Park to win the final World Marathon Major of the season. Tulu crossed in 2:28:52 and was followed by Ludmila Petrova of Russia and Christelle Daunay of France.
Embarking on a difficult quest
Just six days after he races in the ING New York City Marathon, Paralympian Kurt Fearnley will crawl on his hands and knees to complete the Kokoda Track, a 60-mile stretch through the jungle and mountains of Papua New Guinea that is steeped in history and peril.
Race against climate change
The city of Assela lies at the heart of what is great about Ethiopia. It is home to some of the country's most productive and fertile lands and is a breeding ground for distance running talent. But Climate change is causing crop problems in the area and it is affecting development of the country's young runners.

Speaking with Shalane Flanagan
The 2008 season couldn't have gone better for Beijing 10,000m bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan. This season was a lot rockier, but the future remains bright. We caught up with Flanagan, who is contemplating a move to the marathon in 2010 and observed the 40th ING New York City Marathon from the lead truck.
Running with a greater purpose
As Ryan Hall prepared to run in the ING New York City Marathon, he was asked whether he can take American distance running to the next level by beating the dominant East Africans. Hall not only aspires to supplant his foreign rivals on the podium but wants to become more like them off the roads.
