Italian champions Faiella, Scali retire

Seven-time Italian ice dance champions Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali have retired from competitive skating.

The 2010 world bronze medalists continued to compete in the post-Olympic season in hopes of adding a European gold to their two silvers, but Faiella and Scali finished a disappointing fifth at 2011 Europeans.

In a statement on the team's website, Scali wrote, "It was an extraordinary journey, made of passion, sacrifices, good and bad moments, tears, smiles and lots of emotions; it was a journey we faced first of all as persons, and only secondarily as athletes - a travel that changed us, made us stronger and allowed us to cross our path with those of some extraordinary people that suffered and rejoiced for us and with us; people that loved us, supported us, brought us into their enthusiasm and passion, and taught us never to give up."

The duo will continue to appear in shows together, but Faiella plans to work for the police and start a family, while Scali is coaching in Michigan alongside the team's former coaches Pasquale Camerlengo and Anjelika Krylova.
