Germany's Deibler lowers men's 50m fly WR

During the International Swimming Festival held in Aachen, Germany, Steffen Deibler lowered the world record in the men's short course 50m butterfly.

AACHEN, Germany -- During the International Swimming Festival held in Aachen, Germany, Steffen Deibler lowered the world record in the men's short course 50m butterfly.

Deibler clocked a time of 22.06 seconds to erase the 22.18 set by France's Amaury Leveaux during prelims at the 2008 European Short Course Championships.

The record has seen the following recent progression:

22.50 Matt Jaukovic, AUS -- Sydney 10-25-08
22.29 Amaury Leveaux, FRA -- Angers 12-6-08
22.18 Amaury Leveaux, FRA -- Rijeka 12-14-08
22.06 Steffen Deibler, GER -- Aachen 10-24-09

Meanwhile, Kerstin Vogel downed the German record in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.14, wiping out the 30.33 set by Janne Schafer in 2007.
