Giro mulls move to America
Italy's biggest stage race could be making a detour to the United States in the near future. Race director Angelo
Zomegnan said this week that organizers of the Giro d'Italia, which kicks off next year in Amsterdam, are considering the idea of opening the three-week race in Washington, D.C.

MILAN, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Washington could one day host the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, race director Angelo Zomegnan said on Wednesday.
The three-week race, traditionally all around Italy, will begin in Amsterdam next May and organizers are looking even further afield for future starting points.
“For a while we’ve had in mind the idea of starting the Giro in America. Now, there is concrete interest from Washington, (D.C.),” Zomegnan told Gazzetta dello Sport, whose publishers run the Giro.
