    Brazil still team to beat

    The field is set. Each of the 32 spots in the 2010 World Cup has been assigned, but is there a nation that can contend with Brazil? Many think the time has come for a country like Spain to win its first World Cup, or hope an African nation can hoist the trophy at home. But looking ahead to next summer in South Africa, all signs point to Brazil winning a sixth title.

    The field is set

    On the last day of qualifying, in Europe's final match, the 2006 runner-up finally qualified for the 2010 World Cup. And France did so controversially, as an apparent handball led to its winning goal. Regardless, France joined Portugal, Greece and Slovenia from Europe, Uruguay from South America, and Algeria from Africa in rounding out South Africa's field of 32.

    The year 2009 included many highlights for the U.S. men's soccer team, but its final game of the year was not one of them. The Americans lost 3-1 at Denmak in a friendly between nations that had already booked trips to the 2010 World Cup. The U.S. was without some key players, such as Landon Donovan and goalie Tim Howard, but played uninspried in Aarhus.
