Davis doubles up on Sunday
Shani Davis has two more gold medals on his resume. The reigning Olympic 1000m champion won that race on Sunday in Heerenveen, crossing the line in 1:08.48. He was also part of the pursuit squad that tied for first with the Netherlands. Davis won the 1500m title on Friday, the first day of the weekend meet in the Netherlands.
Injured Timmer to miss rest of season
Marianne Timmer, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, thought her season might be over after a nasty crash on Friday in Heerenveen. Her fears were confirmed on Sunday. The Dutch skater suffered a broken left heel in a hard fall, an injury that will keep her out for 12 weeks -- ruining the 35-year-old's Vancouver hopes.
Dutch duo wins in Heerenveen
For two straight days, Sven Kramer was in bed with a fever. On Saturday, he made it to the rink and won the 5,000m final at an Essent ISU World Cup meet in Heerenveen to keep his two-year unbeaten streak in the event alive. "I had to dig deep for this," he said afterward. Countrywoman Ireen Wust secured a victory in the women's 1,500m.
Davis sets track record in 1500m
As one skater saw her Olympic aspirations hurt by a fall in Heerenveen, another boosted his outlook for Vancouver. Shani Davis of the United States set a track record in the Netherlands but had his accomplishment overshadowed by two-time Olympic champion Marianne Timmer rupturing ligaments in her left ankle after a fall on the ice.
